Senior With Ailments Finds FCP Live-In Home Care to Be The Right Choice
Peter and Carol Smith had lived independently in their home in Westford, Massachusetts for years. But Peter, 82, began having multiple health challenges and problems with his mobility that made it difficult for him to take care of himself. Carol tried as much as she could to care for him and herself while handling daily household tasks. It soon became apparent that without someone to help them every day, Peter and Carol might not realize their goal of aging in place.
One day, a friend of the Smiths told them about FCP Live-In, a live-in caregiver provider. The friend had been using the company’s live-in caregiver services since September 2020. The couple wanted more information and decided to contact the company. So, FCP Live-In Care Coordinator Eric Rosenberger arranged to meet with Peter and Carol at their home to discuss the company’s services and did an assessment of their needs. Peter and Carol were pleased with the outcome.
“We were able to match up a caregiver that met Peter’s needs and they have been happy ever since,” Rosenberger said. “It’s really nice that we can provide a service for people who want to stay in their home.”
Survey after survey has shown that the Smiths are among thousands of seniors nationwide who say they want to live independently in their own homes, or in their communities, as long as possible. In one national survey, nearly 90 percent of the respondents said they want to age in place. The respondents were 50 years old and over and were across all age, race, income, and health status categories, according to the survey by Capital Caring Health, a nonprofit provider of elder, advanced illness, and hospice care, and WebMD, an online resource of health information.
Some seniors acknowledge that they may not be able to successfully live on their own without having someone to help them. This is what FCP Live-In does: Provide help for people who want to stay in their homes. The company’s live-in caregivers perform a wide range of tasks, such as helping clients bathe, groom, dress, and assisting them with toileting and incontinence care, among other things.
Besides personal care, FCP Live-in caregivers do household chores, such as sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms, making beds, doing laundry, preparing nutritious meals, feeding clients (if necessary), and washing dishes. They also run errands, go grocery shopping, and take clients to their medical appointments.
FCP Live-In caregivers are also sensitive to issues their clients face and support them in their efforts to live independently, despite their challenges. It didn’t take long for the Smiths to experience this with Sam, the couple’s live-in caregiver.
“We have had FCP Live-In services for three weeks and both my husband Peter and I are extremely happy,” Carol said. “Sam is very caring, always ready to help Pete, and very encouraging to him at all times. He not only is a great help to Pete, but he has become an integral part of his life by giving Pete hope and compassion.”
FCP Live-In Focuses On Keeping Seniors Home
For the past 24 years, FCP Live-In has been bringing hope to seniors and their families throughout New England. In many cases, adult children, who are working and raising their own families, live too far away to care for their aging parents. So, having a live-in caregiver to help older adults remain in a secure and familiar environment gives families peace of mind.
“I am excited to be a part of such a wonderful and needed service to help our seniors maintain their independence in the comfort of their own home,” said Andrea Maroto, FXP Live-In’s Regional Sales Manager. “Now more than any other time in history, I feel every day, every moment is a blessing and that our seniors deserve the opportunity to stay comfortable, cared for, and supported where they feel their best: In their own home.“
FCP Live-In goes to great lengths to hire the best live-in caregivers for its clients. The company’s caregivers are certified nursing assistants, home health aides, or personal care assistants with two or more years of professional experience.
Prior to hiring caregivers, the company runs state and federal background checks on applicants, who also undergo a round of in-depth interviews. Only the applicants who stand out are invited back for a final interview. In addition to an in-person meeting, applicants are also required to take and pass a skills assessment and attend an all-day orientation where their capabilities and attitude are further evaluated. FCP Live-In has established this extensive hiring process to ensure that clients receive quality care.
Live-In Care Offers An Alternative To Nursing Home Care
FCP Live-In has found that having skilled and reliable caregivers allow more seniors to achieve their goal of living independently, even though they may have health challenges, such as:
- Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias
- Amputations
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
- Depression
- Heart disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- Stroke
FCP Live-In also provides live-in caregivers for hospice care and end-of-life care.
Without live-in caregivers, many seniors, especially those who do not have family members or friends to rely on, would more than likely have to disrupt their lives and move into a nursing home or an assisted living facility. In these institutional settings, staff must divide their time and attention among multiple residents during their shift. On many occasions, seniors are left alone for long periods of time before a staff member can take care of them.
In addition, these facilities have set schedules for meals, activities, and visiting hours. In contrast, FCP Live-clients can set their own daily schedule because they do not have to wait for a caregiver to arrive to help. This means that seniors can eat when they want, have help in managing their medication, or following their doctor’s orders. This is what David Anthony envisioned when he started the company in 1997.
“FCP Live-In is about caring for people,” Anthony said. “I founded this company because the options are limited when it comes to caring for a loved one. Right now, you either have a home health aide who comes to the home for a few hours, or a loved one needs to go into an assisted living facility.”
For many seniors, particularly those who live alone or facing multiple ailments like Peter, the companionship of an in-home caregiver is just as important as having someone to take care of their personal needs and household chores. At the Smith’s home, for instance, Peter and Sam are getting along just fine.
“Sam is aware of his needs and offers Peter security in knowing that he is there,” Carol said. “Sam is a wonderful person.”
