Facts About Depression

Depression is a medical condition that affects how a person feels, act and think. The illness consistently places a person in a dark mood and causes such feelings as helplessness, hopelessness, and anger.

People in the throes of depression often say that others do not understand the anguish caused by the condition. Family or friends tell them to “shake it off” or “get over it.” Medical and behavioral specialists, however, say depression is not something that people can just “get over” as they would “get over” a common cold.

Depression is a true medical condition just as hypertension and heart disease. Once diagnosed, depression can be treated with medication, psychotherapy, and other treatment options.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), depression symptoms are difficult to recognize in the elderly because they are similar to symptoms of other illnesses common to older adults. For example, confusion and isolation are symptoms of depression but are also symptoms of dementia. A physical examination will help determine whether an older adult is suffering from depression or a medical condition.

To further complicate matters, a chronic physical illness—as well as the medication taken for the illness—can bring on depression, according to NAMI.

In addition to a medical condition, the National Institute on Aging says that other factors contribute to the mood disorder in older adults such as:

  • Genetic history
  • Episodes of depression at a younger age
  • Brain chemistry
  • Life stresses (death of a loved one, moving out a family home)

Depression can become so severe that older adults—especially those with other medical conditions—can not care for themselves. At FCP Live-In, our caregivers understand the needs of seniors who suffer from depression. We provide comprehensive caregiving services so they can focus on getting treatment for this condition.

Seniors with Depression Need Support

Since depression can last from months to years, emotional support from family and friends is just as essential for seniors as receiving treatment.

Older adults need care as they battle such problems as:

  • Feelings of helplessness
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty carrying out daily tasks
  • Loss of interest in activities that they once enjoyed
  • Loss of appetite or overeating
  • Excessive fatigue

Depression can worsen, particularly when older adults experience the death of a spouse, a move out of a family home, or other issues.

Having FCP Live-In’s caregivers help with routine tasks, personal care and companionship will go a long way in helping older adults improve their quality of life.

Depression Can Lead to Suicide

Of the estimated 39 million people in the United States aged 65 years and older, approximately 7 million suffer from depression, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Sadly, depression in older adults is a major risk factor for suicide. What’s more, NAMI reports that those who have committed suicide sought help prior to their death. According to NAMI:

  • 20 percent see a doctor on the day they died
  • 40 percent see a doctor the week they died
  • 70 percent see a doctor the month they died

The figures clearly show that depression is often missed.

Depression among older adults is not just a problem in the United States. The World Health Organization reports that over 20 percent of adults over 60 years old are affected by a mental or neurological disorder. The most common of these disorders are dementia which affects 5 percent of the population, and depression which affects 7 percent of the population.

Older adults with depression and other disorders find it burdensome to deal with their medical conditions while taking care of themselves and their daily responsibilities. If you or someone you love suffer from depression and cannot carry out your normal routines, turn to FCP Live-In.
