What Is A Personal Care Assistant?

A personal care assistant (PCA) provides support to someone who needs help with daily living activities but does not need regular medical care. PCAs work in private homes, nursing homes, group homes, as well as adult daycare centers. The elderly, people recently released from a hospital, those with a chronic illness or a cognitive impairment benefit from PCA services.

PCAs work as employees of a home care agency or as independent contractors. PCAs who work for home care agencies are considered employees and the company handles payroll taxes and other employment issues.

Before becoming a personal care assistant (PCA), some states require applicants to have:

  • A high school education
  • Successfully passed state-approved Personal Care Assistant courses
  • A valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, and use of a reliable vehicle
  • A current CPR certification

While PCAs are trained caregivers, some of their personal care assistant duties overlap with those provided by Home Health Aides (HHA) and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA). But, the main difference is PCAs do not provide medical care or administer medications to clients.

The personal care duties of a PCA include helping clients with:

  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Grooming
  • Feeding
  • Mobility
  • Toileting

personal care assistants (PCA) also perform light housekeeping chores, laundry, shop for groceries, prepare meals according to a doctor’s requirements, and taking clients to medical appointments.

Most importantly, PCAs provide emotional support and companionship to clients who live independently or who have family members but cannot care for them every day. With help from a PCA, clients can go to senior centers, exercise based on a doctor’s recommendation, play games, work on hobbies, and other entertaining activities.

Besides taking care of clients, PCAs are also responsible for following previously established care plans, documenting daily activities, and physical or emotional changes in clients. These records are reviewed by those involved in the client’s health, well-being, and safety.

At FCP Live-In, we ensure that our employees are trained, certified, have previous experience, and are a good match for our clients. We run in-depth state and national background checks on applicants to ensure the safety of our clients. In addition, we conduct multiple interviews with potential employees before hiring them.

Need For PCAs on the Rise

Although PCAs work in a variety of settings, the need for PCAs as in-home caregivers is expected to increase due to the projected growth of the older adult population. The U.S. Census projects the population of people over 65 years old to reach 96 million, or 23.5 percent, by 2060.

What’s more, older adults want to “age in place,” meaning they want to stay in their own home instead of moving into retirement communities or assisted living facilities. But to do this, many seniors, especially those who are ill or have chronic health conditions, will need help managing their daily living activities.

As a result, the demand for PCAs and HHAs is expected to grow 34 percent over the next decade, from 3.4 million in 2019 to 4.6 million in 2029, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Financial Options for personal care assistant PCA Services

In-home care can become costly over time, but fortunately, financial options are available for individuals and families needing personal care services. For instance, some personal care services are paid for through long-term care insurance or funds from a reverse mortgage.

Many states offer home and community-based waiver programs to people who need PCAs and other caregivers. These programs are usually carried out through local social services agencies.

One option is The Personal Care Assistance (PCA) Medicaid Waiver program that pays for personal care services for individuals between 18 and 64 who would otherwise have to go to a nursing home, hospital, or other institution to receive long-term care.

Home care agencies also have options for families or individuals needing personal care services. FCP Live-In, for instance, has financing options that make having a PCA or other home care worker more affordable than paying an assistant living facility.
