Why Respite Care is Important
According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, approximately 25% of American adults 18 years of age and older acted as a primary caregiver for an ill, aging, or disabled family member in the past 30 days.
While caring for an aging or disabled loved one is of the most selfless things you can do, your generosity could come at great cost – financially, physically, and emotionally.
Consider that more than 60% of family caregivers have cut back on work hours, taken a leave of absence, or made other career changes in order to meet their caregiving responsibilities. Half were late to work or had to leave early, and 1 in 5 reported that caregiving had created a financial strain.
Family caregivers are also more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, use psychoactive medications, have worse self-reported physical health, experience compromised immune function, and even die prematurely.
When a family caregiver is under constant stress, those under their care will suffer as well. In fact, caregiver stress is recognized as a leading risk factor for elder abuse.
Options for Respite Care
Respite care offers a break from your caregiving responsibilities. Used effectively, these services will support and strengthen your own ability as a caregiver.
Respite Care in Adult Day Care
Adult day care is frequently utilized by caregivers who must be away from their loved one for several hours each day. These programs provide a safe environment where your family member can interact with others and participate in staff-led activities, such as art and music programs. Some adult day cares also offer transportation services and meals.
However, there’s often a long waiting list for acceptance to adult day care, and some won’t accept clients with severe mobility issues or those in the latter stages of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Most close on major holidays, and many shut down during inclement weather on very short notice.
Residential Respite Care
Nursing home and assisted living facilities sometimes offer residential respite care, which allows for overnight stays so family caregivers can take an extended break or vacation. Respite care policies will vary from facility to facility, with some only accepting clients when their resident census is low and extra space is available. It’s also not unusual for a residential respite program to require a minimum night stay of at least 3 nights or more.
Do keep in mind that your loved one might find the move to a residential care facility traumatic, especially if they’re suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia-related condition.
Residential respite care can also be fairly expensive, and usually isn’t covered by Medicare.
