Georgette Boland’s close friend Irene Wagner turned to FCP Live-In for heartfelt Hospice Care In her Home

FCP Live-In Is Heartfelt Hospice Care In One’s Own Home

Georgette Boland and Irene Wagner were close friends. In fact, Georgette, who did not have a family, trusted Irene enough to give her power of attorney to manage her personal affairs. Irene also became Georgette’s healthcare proxy so she could make medical-related decisions on behalf of Georgette, who had dementia.

Although Georgette had health challenges, she wanted to stay in her home in Massachusetts and not move into a nursing home where she would live among strangers. Even when Georgette went into a short-term rehabilitation facility, she wanted to return home. But, it was doubtful that Georgette could continue to live independently without someone to help her every day.

One day while at the rehab facility, Georgette’s social worker spoke with Irene about FCP Live-In, a New England-based company that provides live-in caregivers. Irene was in favor of hiring a live-in caregiver because this would give Georgette what she wanted—to stay in her home as long as possible.

“The reason I chose this company is because I liked the idea of one person taking care of someone that I loved!” ––Irene Wagner

“The reason I chose this company is because I liked the idea of one person taking care of someone that I loved,” Irene said. “In the beginning, I was there checking in, of course, but then, it got easier.”

Georgette eventually went into hospice care and Grace, the FCP Live-In’s caregiver, was prepared because the company provides hospice care services. Grace worked with Irene and the hospice staff to make Georgette as comfortable as possible during her final days.

“When it came time for Georgette to pass, Grace stayed and held one hand and I held the other hand,” Irene recalled. “She cried and I cried. So, this company has people that also feel.”

Georgette, like thousands of other seniors, want to stay in their homes—regardless of their health conditions. In a national survey conducted by Capital Caring Health and WebMD, nearly 90 percent of adults over 50—across all age, race, income, and health status categories—said they want to remain at home and age in place.

For this reason, FCP Live-In tailors its services to meet the needs of their clients. What makes FCP Live-In a cut above is the ability of all of its staff to work in tandem to create a 24/7 professional support system to help clients, many of whom have chronic health conditions, such as heart disease, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease, which is the most common type of dementia.

Caring for seniors who want to maintain their independence in the safety and comfort of familiar surroundings is FCP Live-In’s goal.

“FCP Live-In is about caring for people,” said David Anthony, Founder and CEO of FCP Live-In. “I founded this company because the options are limited when it comes to caring for a loved one. Right now, you either have a home health aide who comes to the home for a few hours, or a loved one needs to go into an assisted living facility. But what if you take the best of both? An insured and bonded live-in caregiver that provides one-on-one care, stays in the home, and is there 24/7. That’s where FCP Live-In comes in.”

FCP Live-In Provides Solutions For Seniors

For the past 24 years, FCP Live-In has provided live-in caregiving services to older adults all over the Northeastern United States. FCP Live-In is not a nursing home or an assisted living facility, but an affordable live-in home caregiver provider.

When meeting with FCP Live-In to discuss solutions for loved ones in need of care, there is one challenge that everyone has in common, according FCP Live-In’s Regional Sales Manager Andrea Maroto.

“The one challenge that families and their loved ones always mention is that they didn’t want to leave their home, their spouse, their memories,” said Maroto, who has been with the agency for over two decades.  “I often thought about how wonderful it would be for seniors to stay home and get the care they deserve and need while not losing what is most important to them; their family, friends and special place they call home.”

With FCP Live-In, seniors get one-on-one attention from the caregiver who lives with them. This is in stark contrast to nursing homes or assistant living facilities where staff divide their time on multiple residents in need of care.

Irene said she hopes the positive experience she and Georgette had with FCP Live-In will help someone who is deciding whether to have one person take care of their loved one or whether to “place them somewhere with all kinds of other people taking care of them.”

FCP Live-In is equipped to handle multiple aspects of care, as the company and Grace did in Georgette’s case.

“FCP Live-In and Grace were able to give Georgette exactly what she needed and wanted,” said FCP Live-In Care Coordinator Rich Williams. “I am proud that we played a role in her care. Grace was truly part of a team with Irene and the hospice staff”

With FCP Live-In, It’s A Team Effort

FCP Live-In’s caregivers provide a variety of services, such as helping seniors with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and other daily living activities. Additionally, caregivers take on light housekeeping chores, prepare meals, shop for groceries, run errands, and provide transportation to medical appointments. Just as important is the companionship caregivers provide, particularly to seniors who live alone.

Another challenge families and friends face is finding care and support for dementia patients, Maroto said. But FCP Live-In caregivers help in this area, too.

“FCP Live-In provides one-on-one care in familiar environments, offering peace of mind for the families and security and comfort for the patient with dementia,” Maroto said.

All of FCP Live-In’s caregivers are nurse’s aides, home health aides, and personal care aides with at least two years of professional experience. Each caregiver undergoes full state and federal background checks, and all are bonded and insured.

The agency also uses advanced technology to determine the best caregiver-to-client match based on client care needs and best-suited personality chemistry.

FCP Live-In and its live-in caregivers team up with different healthcare professionals to provide the type of support clients need, including palliative care and hospice care. According to Irene, it was difficult at times, especially in the last couple of weeks of Georgette’s life because of her dementia, but Grace “stuck it out.”

Irene was pleased with the way it all worked out with Grace.

“Grace was our angel,” Irene said, “and she couldn’t help anymore than she did with Georgette. If I had to do this again, I would use this service again and recommend it highly.”
