Incontinence and its Causes
Incontinence is the inability to control oneโs bladder or bowels. This loss of control can cause a person to have a bowel or urinary leakage at any time and any place.
While there are different types of incontinence, the most common among older adults are:
Fecal (bowel) Incontinence
Fecal incontinence occurs when stool leaks from the rectum so quickly that a person cannot get to the bathroom in time. Bowel incontinence can be the result of:
- Diarrhea
- Chronic constipation
- Medication
- Muscle damage
- Nerve damage
Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence occurs when increased pressure from activities such as coughing, laughing or sneezing causes the bladder to leak. This condition has numerous causes that include:
- Alzheimerโs disease (which affects the nervous system)
- Diabetes, stroke and other chronic conditions
- Medication
- Nerve damage
- Pelvic organ prolapse in women
- Prostrate conditions in men
- Weak bladder muscles
Incontinence can be managed but treatment depends on the type of incontinence a patient has. Surgery is also a possibility if all other treatment options have failed.
An older adult dealing with incontinence may need a caregiver to help in such a delicate situation. At FCP Live-In, our highly skilled caregivers know how to handle incontinence accidents in a sensitive and compassionate manner.
Incontinence is Not a Normal Part of the Aging Process
While kidney function changes as a person grows older, incontinence problems are not a normal part of the aging process. But, older adults who believe that incontinence is normal might not report this condition to their doctors.
As a result, seniors who do not seek treatment may isolate themselves to avoid having an accident in public and develop an odor. Studies have shown that increased social isolation places older adults at risk for depression.
If you are caring for an older family member, it may be difficult for your loved one to talk with you about the problem. Or, you may find it awkward to take care of your loved oneโs incontinent episodes. This is where FCP Live-Inโs in-home care services can help.
Whether an incontinence accident happens at home or outside of the home, our caregivers help older adults with maintaining their hygiene and change of clothes, if necessary.
Our caregivers will also assist with scheduled bathroom trips, and give reminders for when to exercise or take medication. At FCP Live-In, our priorities are to provide quality incontinence care and to ensure the well-being of our clients.

Incontinence Contributes to Falls, Fractures Among Older Adults
A national report found 50 percent of older adults in the United States have problems with incontinence. Of that group:
- Nearly 44 percent had urinary leakage
- 17 percent had bowel leakage
- Nearly 11 percent reported both urinary and bowel leakage
Whatโs more, studies also show that incontinence is a contributing factor to falls and fractures among older adults. For instance, the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society reported results from a survey conducted with over 6,000 women who had problems with frequent urge incontinence (a strong and sudden need to urinate).
The average age of the women were 75 years, plus or minus 4.6 years. A three-year follow up found that 55 percent of the women reported falling while 8.5 percent reported fractures. Urinary frequency, going to the bathroom multiple times at night and rushing to the bathroom to avoid an incontinent accident were given as factors that increased the risk of falls, which resulted in fractures.
Similarly, another study found that urinary incontinence was associated with a two-fold increase in falls, as well as a decrease in physical functioning and a factor in placing older adults in a nursing home.
FCP Live-In helps to eliminate the need for placing your loved one in a nursing home or assisted living facility. We can assist your loved one in the security of familiar surroundings. Our caregivers can also help to alleviate your loved oneโs fear of falling when going to the bathroom. One of the many services FCP Live-In caregivers provide is assisting with toileting, incontinence care, and maintaining hygiene.
