How to Set Video Settings Correctly On An iPhone
When shooting any video make sure you have set the video to a higher video setting than what is standard. The type of iPhone doesn’t matter as they all will shoot in HD.
Open Settings > Camera > Record Video to adjust the default resolution and frame rate from 720p at 30fps, 1080p at 30fps or 60fps, as well as 4K at 24fps, 30fps, or 60fps. Enabling the HDR video option here lets you record in full high-dynamic range with Dolby Vision.
The minimum Apple option of “720 HD at 30FPS” will be to small and pixelated to be used for the majority of Advertising uses.
Please select “1080p HD at 30FPS” or higher for all your FCP Live-In video uses. The higher settings are better, so if you can shoot at “1080p HD at 60FPS” go ahead.
In example, a minute of video will be approximately
• 130 MB at 1080p HD at 30FPS (Default)
• 175 MB at 1080p HD at 60FPS (Smoother)
• 350 MB at 4K at 30FPS (higher resolution)
Keep in mind the higher you go the larger the file size so you may run out of room on your phone.
There’s one major caveat that you should know about when recording at 60fps instead of 30fps, and that’s file size. Because your phone is capturing twice the number of frames, 60fps videos take up more storage, and there’s often a recording time limit if you ramp up to 4K.
So, if you’re limited on internal memory or storage, the lowest setting you can use is “1080p HD at 30FPS (Default)”
Note:
Later iPhones will have more options. Any iPhone from the past several years offers basic video-recording options, though the premium Pro and Pro Max editions up the game with advanced video features. You can shoot a video at different resolutions and frame rates, including 720p at 30 frames per second, 1080p at 30 or 60fps, and 4K at 24, 30, or 60fps. You’re able to shoot video using the rear and front camera, with the former offering several zoom presets, depending on your model.
How to Set Video Settings Correctly On An Android
On an Android device, open up the Camera app > switch to Video mode > and then tap on the recording settings to open up a list of resolutions and fps values.
• 1080p HD at 30FPS (Default)
• 1080p HD at 60FPS (Smoother)
• 4K at 30FPS (higher resolution)
Like the iPhone, default video recordings should be set to HD (1080p) at 30fps. Switch the fps value to 60 for the smoothest capturing.
