What Is Home Companion Care?

Home companion care is a type of in-home caregiving for older adults and adults with disabilities. This form of care is particularly beneficial for seniors who live alone or who live with others who cannot assist them with daily living activities.

Home companion caregivers help seniors stay connected with their families, friends, and community activities. With emotional support from and friendship of a home companion caregiver, seniors no longer have to miss out on participating in events or enjoying their favorite hobbies. This means that taking a walk, listening to music, going to a senior center, a movie, a play, or taking an overnight trip are all possible with help from a companion caregiver.

Companion care not only helps older adults improve their quality of life, but a companion caregiver provides peace of mind to their client’s family members. In many instances, family members are an older adult’s first caregiver. But, relatives who do long-distance caregiving while juggling work or family have difficulties taking care of their loved one. A companion caregiver takes the pressure off of overwhelmed family members who can better enjoy visits with their loved one.

In-Home Companions Provide Personal Care

In-home companions also provide personal support to older support in a number of ways. For instance, in-home caregivers personal care services, that may include:

  • Help with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, walking, and other daily living activities
  • Light housekeeping, such as dusting, vacuuming, cleaning, making beds, and doing laundry
  • Preparing meals based on a client’s dietary requirements, and helping to feed clients who have difficulty feeding themselves
  • Providing transportation to doctor’s appointments, grocery stores, social events

Although companion care does not involve medical services, companion caregivers can also monitor their client’s behavior and provide medication reminders.

Companion Care Services In Demand

The demand—and importance of—in-home care workers are part of a growing trend among older adults who want to stay in their homes as long as possible. The trend comes at a time when demographic changes are taking place in the United States.

The U.S. Census projects that in the next decade, the number of people over 65 years old will outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history. By 2030, 1 in every 5 residents will be retirement age, according to census figures.

FCP Live-In understands the concerns older adults have as they attempt to live independently while acknowledging their need for personal care and companion services. We have been serving seniors and their families for over two decades and we plan to continue offering quality in-home care to support older adults who want to age in place in familiar surroundings.

Loneliness Linked to Serious Health Conditions

The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers loneliness a public health risk for seniors. Studies show that loneliness and social isolation put seniors at risk for dementia and other serious health conditions.

What’s more, seniors who experience social isolation and loneliness may face a higher risk of mortality, heart disease, and depression, according to a report released in February 2020 by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).

Authors of the NASEM report wrote that studies have found social isolation significantly increased an older adult’s risk for premature death from all causes, and placed seniors at a 50 percent increased risk of dementia.

A National Poll on Healthy Aging conducted by the University of Michigan found that 1 in 3 respondents (34 percent) reported feeling a lack of companionship and 27 percent reported feeling isolated from others during the past year. The poll, released in March 2019, also found that living alone was linked to feeling lonely.
