What is Lymphoma?
Lymphoma is an umbrella term for a type of cancer that begins in cells within the lymphatic system. This system is made up of lymph nodes, lymph vessels, lymph ducts, and certain organs.
A person diagnosed with lymphoma has a weakened immune system because the cancer affects the lymph nodes, which contain white blood cells that help fight infection.
The two main types of lymphoma are Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin. Within those two types are various subtypes of lymphoma, some of which spread either slowly or aggressively. While children and teens can develop lymphoma, researchers have found that older adults are at a higher risk for developing the cancer.
If lymphoma worsens, older adults will not be able to live on their own with such a debilitating disease. FCP Live-In, however, can step in and provide the support that helps seniors maintain a sense of dignity and independence as they manage the disease.

Lymphoma Treatment May Decrease Seniors’ Quality of Life
Older adults with lymphoma may need help carrying out daily tasks, such as doing laundry or vacuuming or running errands. Generally, it takes seniors longer to recover from cancer treatments that leave them feeling tired and weak.
Although the type of cancer treatment that a person undergoes depends on the type of lymphoma that has developed, the treatment may have side effects. For instance, chemotherapy and radiation are standard treatments for various cancers, including lymphoma. And, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting are common side effects of chemotherapy.
The person with lymphoma who experiences side effects or complications from the disease may struggle to lead a normal life. An older adult’s inability to take care of routine tasks coupled with deteriorating health can decrease that person’s quality of life without the help of an experienced caregiver.
Thousands in the United States Diagnosed with Lymphoma
The World Health Organization places lymphoma as the fourth most common cancer and the sixth leading cause of cancer in the United States.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society estimates that 874,730 people either have lymphoma, including the different types and subtypes, or are in remission. What’s more, an additional 82,310 new lymphoma cases are expected to be diagnosed in the United States in 2019, the organization’s figures show.
According to an article published in the Hematological Oncology journal on June 2017, the incidence of lymphoma in patients 60 years old and older has increased by more than 50 percent over the past 25 years.
Unfortunately, older adults with lymphoma have worse outcomes than people in younger age groups, the article said. This is primarily due to the fact that older adults typically have two or more chronic diseases in addition to lymphoma, and their organs do not function as well as they once did.
By having lymphoma, older adults will need as much help as possible each day. FCP Live-In can provide this support through its caregivers and 24-hour professional support system for our staff and clients. To learn more about our Lymphoma Care services, call us at 1 (866) 559-9492.
